SHIPRA RIVER ( UJJAIN )


The famous and widely known river of Ujjain is Shipra,  which originates from kakri bardi hills, Vindhya range, north of Dhar and flows north across Malwa plateau to join Chambal river. The city of Ujjain resides on its right bank. Every 12years, the Kumbh mela or Simhastha is held for a month on the riverside ghats, and sadhus and devotees come from all over the country for 'Shahi Snaan' in the river.

  It's a perennial river and its condition some time back was not so good in the city.Water was acute in the river and there were Algae and Jalkumbhi all over. Seeing the fast approaching Kumbh 2016 in Ujjain and the rage of sadhus,the government took a bold step and as a result of Narmada-Shipra link project, the waters of Narmada have revived  Shipra again.Under the project, Narmada river water has been lifted to a height of 350 metres, using electricity driven pumps, after which it has been diverted to the origin of Shipra river, which is around 50 kilometres away. The project has virtually infused new life in Shipra and made it ready for oncoming Kumbh mela.

Besides Shipra, there is Khan river which is quite dirty, muddy and full of sediments. Its water is neither potable nor appropriate for a bath. To avoid its merging with Shipra river and polluting it, diversion work is already underway in the city outskirts, under which Khan will be routed out of the city, without getting it merged with Shipra.
Then there is Gambhir river, flowing in outskirts of Ujjain. The dam built on this river, known as Gambhir Dam,acts as source of drinking water for whole Ujjain city. The dam has 7 gates to it and is totally dependant on annual rainfall.
